USADSF Announces Kevin Smith as Newest Member of the Board of Directors

USA Deaf Sports Federation is pleased to announce that Kevin Smith has joined the Board of Directors. Smith brings a wealth of professional experience through his involvement in various roles in Deaf sports at the amateur level for over 35 years. Smith hails from Illinois where he currently resides in Berwyn, IL. After graduating from Illinois School for the Deaf, he attended Gallaudet University. He has been with the US Postal Service for 35 years and serves as an ASL tutor at Moraine Valley Community College in Palos Hills, Illinois. In April 2021, he was appointed by the Illinois Governor to be the commissioner of the Deaf and Hard of Hearing Commission.

As part of the USA Deaf Basketball team, Smith competed in his first Deaflympics in 1993 in Sofia, Bulgaria. He returned as part of the team to compete in the next two summer Deaflympics (1997-Copenhagen, Denmark and 2001-Rome, Italy). He and the USA Deaf Basketball team earned gold medals in each of those three Deaflympics.

Smith has also served in many other relevant capacities such as the following:

  • Basketball Players Advisory Council - United States of America Deaf Basketball

  • Board Member of Midwest Center on Law and the Deaf (MCLD) Chicago, IL

  • Hall of Fame Committee, United States of America Deaf Sports Federation

  • Technical Delegate, USA Deaf Sports Federation Representative Taiwan 2009

  • Moderator on National Alliance Of Black Interpreters “Come Together Again” ZOOM Workshop, October 2020

Smith will begin his at-Large Board Member appointment during USADSF’s November 2021 Board retreat. Please join the Board in welcoming Kevin Smith to the team!

USADSF’s Board of Directors currently comprise of Danny Lacey (President), Liza Offreda, Ph.D (Vice President), Ralph Fernandez (Member at Large), Jeffrey Mansfield (Member at Large), Meghan Maiwald (NSO Representative) and Stacy Nowak (NSO Representative).
