WASHINGTON, D.C. (Jan. 21, 2011) – After emerging as champions of the Friendship Games four months ago, the US Deaf Women’s team competes once again in local tournaments throughout the Spring and are intent on making themselves known. In Elkridge, MD, the ‘Division A’ team competed with nine other Chesapeake Region teams in both A and AA Divisions.
With a line-up consisting of the D.C. locals as well as two new players, the US opened with a 2-0 (26-24, 25-21) victory over J Stroke [A], after being down 10 points in the first set. The girls fought but dropped their second match versus Oh, Hey [AA], 0-2 (22-25, 17-25) and came back with a solid win over Block Party [A], 2-0 (25-20, 26-24). The US team split their final match versus Reloaded [AA], 1-1 (25-22, 17-25).
Ending the weekend with a winning 5-3 record, Head Coach Lynn Ray Boren expressed that he was happy with what he saw even though the players looked rusty. Referring to the 2012 World Championships, Boren states, “We have a long way to prepare for our big event in month of August. We have to stick together and work together to excel in our mission. There are more tournaments to come and we shall get better.” The U.S. Team returns to action on February 4 in Sterling, VA in the Super Volley Bowl.
